We love the way this pack carries, its slimmer profile makes for a very controlled load that doesn't move around on your back but still allows 5 days worth of food and gear to be carried comfortably. It does admirable double duty as a summit or day pack when away from base camp. For 2009, GG have made changes to the Miniposa™ to make it even lighter. They've removed the carbon fiber stays and channels, since you won't really need them for the weight you'll be carrying, they switched the outer pocket mesh to the same lighter weight mesh that we use on the Murmur™, they're using a lighter weight elastic on the tops of the outer pockets, they're using a lighter weight 3D mesh on the shoulder straps and hip belt, and they replaced some heavy webbing and elastic to lighter grosgrain ribbon. If you are a desert hiker, take shorter trips, or just don't have that much stuff because you've seen the light, this might be the pack for you. In field testing, we loved the way this pack carried. Its slimmer profile makes for a very controlled load that doesn't move around on your back but still allows 5 days worth of gear to be carried comfortably. It does admirable double duty as a summit or day pack when away from base camp. The ultra lightwieght Mariposa builds on the popular features of the stalwart G4 backpack, effectively incorporating the "dual use" technique of ultra lightweight backpacking. Your sleeping pad (NightLight™, Z-Lite™/Z-Rest™, Thermarest® 3/4 length, or other 20"-wide pad) becomes part of the pack frame by inserting into the back of the pack. This way it can be extracted during rest stops to sit/lay on without unpacking your pack.
To make things even more lightweight, the shoulder straps and waist belt are designed to accept unused articles of clothing as padding. Foam inserts are included if you are disinclined to use sleeping socks, gloves etc as your padding. The left side mesh pocket is deep enough to swallow a 3-litre bottle.

The Mariposa adds a host of new features in a new trim silhouette, including hollow, aluminum-tipped, carbon fibre pack stays for real load transfer (removable for lighter loads), unique asymmetric side pocket design (right hand pocket is accessible while wearing the pack), dual function removable adjustable sternum strap/emergency whistle, and hydration bladder pocket with ports on each side. Cushy wicking fabric on the shoulder straps and waist belt prevent slipping, and the 3-dimensional weave aids in quicker drying. Multiple pockets help you organize your load.

Tons of strategically placed lashing loops enable you to easily adapt the pockets to carry longer items by lashing them to the sides. The unique "Y" top lash strap allows for a more stable 3-point connection to secure items such as rolled sleeping pads, with still only one buckle to operate. The sturdy shock cord compression lacing allows you to reduce the pack volume so it still carries the load tightly for shorter trips.

Many of the features are removable, so you don't need to carry the weight if you don't require that feature for a particular trip. You can configure the basic pack, with sternum strap and carbon fibre stays, for under one pound. You'll love the attention to detail such as the angle on the bottom right pocket to make it more accessible, the use of "V" lash loops to spread the loads over a wider area and for ease of use, and the lining of the shoulder strap and waist belt with silnylon against the wicking fabric, for easier insertion of socks, etc, and to help prevent those socks from getting soggy from sweat.

This sweet little Gossamer Gear pack is the answer to the eternal question, WWGC (what would Glen carry?). GG founder, Glen Van Peski, the lightest guy we know, designed the Murmur for himself and has been using it for some time. The G4 is designed to effectively incorporate the "dual use" technique of ultralight backpacking. The bottom of the G4 pack "flares" out to provide more area for your sleeping bag, to minimize loss of loft from overstuffing. The HUGE side pockets will hold, as an example, two, 2-litre bottles, on EACH side!

A generous mesh pocket on the back of the pack gives you a place to put wet items where they won't dampen the other contents of your pack. Multiple lashing straps allow you to hang socks out to dry, or secure loose or wet items onto the outside of the pack.

For hikers not using trekking poles, thumb loops allow you to keep your hands high sometimes so they don't swell. A top lashing strap helps secure a rolled sleeping pad or similar gear to the top of the pack, though the pack is large enough that it's hard to imagine not being able to fit everything inside.

This pack is recommended for loads of 30 pounds or less. The G4 now comes standard with an adjustable and removable sternum strap. If the weight of the sternum strap is just too much to bear, many users find that they can achieve the same effect by tying a bandanna or fastening a caribiner between the thumb loops.

Gossamer Gear Squall Classic - 707g ultra lightweight 2 person tarp tent
The Squall Classic is Henry Shires's original Squall design. It was tweaked for weight reduction and a bathtub floor was also added. The final result is this amazing two person shelter that weighs about a pound and a half including pegs(4), lines, rear pole, and stuff sack!

The canopy of the Classic is made using the Gossamer Gear time tested spinnaker sail cloth. It is light, waterproof and has the added advantage over other fabrics of NOT stretching or sagging when wet or damp - minimizing or eliminating the need to get out and re-tension the lines. This iteration of the Squall comes with a rear hoop pole and utilizes a trekking pole in the front or an optional front aluminum tarp pole. The Classic is optimized for ventilation with mesh front, rear, and side panels and is accessed by a "T" zipper in the front mesh. Four stakes is the minimum amount needed to set this shelter up and there is an optional tie out on each side making set up easy. The Squall Classic also has a silnylon bathtub floor and a small front "beak" to complete this super light package.

We recommend seam sealing the Classic with Silnet for maximum performance in inclement weather. If you plan on using your Classic on rough ground we also recommend using a light ground cloth like the Polycryo ground sheet to preserve the life of the floor. If you don't hike with Trekking poles we can get the Squall Classic Front Tarp Pole at just 1.8 ounces for a 42" aluminum pole. Like all single wall shelters there is a probability of some condensation under certain conditions. The Classic is designed to minimize this and the mesh side panels provide an outlet for any condensation that does occur. Proper setup will also aid in controlling condensation. This shelter was recently field tested under ideal condensation conditions and the occupant and the floor stayed completely dry.

Gossamer Gear Bug Canopy
The Gossamer Gear Bug Canopy was designed to provide effective protection from flying bugs and to a lesser degree crawling bugs with a minimum weight penalty. At 3 oz, the Bug Canopy can be easily added to your Spinnshelter and will form a small enclosure from the middle of your sleeping bag up over your head and out towards the front door. The design is simple but effective; you will attach the Bug Canopy to five attachment points already sewn into your Spinnshelter which will create a canopy over your head and will keep pesky bugs at bay so you can eat, read or sleep in peace.

Gossamer Gear Titanium Pegs
Titanium is well known for its high strength to weight ratio and you can buy only the quantity you need. If you only lost a stake or two, you don't need to buy a whole bunch of new ones. Tite-lite(tm) stakes have nice gentle points on them, so they don't puncture your lightweight pack.
For the Spinnshelter, we recommend a minimum of 8, which gives you a stake at each of four corners, two guy lines, and two vestibule stakeouts. You may want to consider getting 12, which gives you extra stakes for fastening additional stakeouts. This allows the use of all five stakeouts on the windward side of the tarp.

Gossamer Gear Spectra Cord
Spectra cord offers the highest strength to weight ratio for lashing uses. Because the material is slippery, many standard knots are less effective when using spectra cord. Tying loops in ends of shorter pieces with a figure 8 knot and using girth hitches is a more efficient way of using spectra for tarp rigging. The high-visibiiity Spectra 200 is a fluorescent yellow color.

Gossamer Gear went back to the drawing board for this new version of our ever popular EZC. While it is the same great "easy to see" orange, it now has a reflective tracer woven in making it even easier to see, especially at night or in failing light. EZC2 also has a softer hand and is larger in diameter, at 2mm, making it easier to work with and it works much better with the line tensioners on the Squall Classic, SpinnTwinn, and SpinnShelter than the older version of the EZC line. Dyneema spectra cord, while offering great strength to weight ratios, can be daunting to use because of it's slippery feel. EZC2 line adds a blaze orange polyester sheath, with a reflective tracer woven in, to a spectra core giving the resultant combination a stiffer hand, higher visibility in low or no light and the ability to use standard backcountry knots. The bright orange color and reflective tracer helps keep you from inadvertently tripping over your guy lines, and makes it easier to find any loose lengths lying around.

Gossamer Gear Insulation Pad
The ThinLight™ pad is not designed for padding, but for insulation. It provides much better insulation for the bottom of your body than the equivalent weight of down when you are lying on it.
Made of Evazote® foam, these pads are made with a unique high pressure nitrogen gas solution process. High quality extrusions and cross-linking of solid polymeric sheets are impregnated with pure nitrogen gas at elevated temperature and extremely high pressure. Then the impregnated solid sheets are expanded in a huge low pressure autoclave. This process results in an extremely regular and uniform cell structure in the foam.

What this means to you is the foam is amazingly light and strong for its density. The pads are tough, flexible and resilient, and exhibit good UV stability. As a closed-cell foam, they will not absorb water.

The torso pads are precisely scored, so the pads will fold in thirds to create an 18" x 10.75" x 2.25" package that fits nicely into the back of a Gossamer Gear G4, G5 or Mariposa pack.

Gossamer Gear Spinnsheet
Gossamer Gear was able to get a deal on some yardage of spinnaker fabric at a significant discount. This pricey fabric is prized for it's strength to weight ratio, but is now, while supplies last, economical enough to use for a groundsheet. The current versions are white, and are slightly heavier (and more durable) than the earlier blue spinnsheets.
Spinnaker fabric ranges in it's waterproof characteristics. This particular cloth does not meet the industry standard of waterproof to 2 psi, and so is described as "highly water-resistant". If you are often camping in very wet areas, this may not be the groundsheet for you. On the other hand, if you are usually sleeping on dry areas, this is a perfect lightweight addition to your gear to help keep the rest of your gear clean(er).

Spinnsheets are now available in a 4-yd. length (by 54" width), in response to customer requests for a larger piece that they could custom trim to a groundcloth of their choosing.

Gossamer Gear Polycryo Ground Sheet
Looking for a ground sheet that's lighter than Spinnaker fabric? The Polycryo ground sheet is constucted from industrial grade cross-linked polyolefin. This material is extremely tough for it's weight, with amazing puncture resistance. It has a tensile strength of 15,400 p.s.i. per ASTM D-883. It is waterproof, but very slightly breathable (1.09 gms of water vapor/100 sq.in./24 hours).

The ground sheet comes in two 40 x 96 " sheets. It weighs 43g per sheet about 20% lighter than the Spinnsheet ground cloth, and much more affordable. It is sold in single packets, and can be easily trimmed by the user to custom configurations.

These ground cloths are absolutely clear, so you can see if you missed any pebbles or pine cones after you put your ground cloth down. It would also serve well as a solar still in an emergency situation. This stuff is amazingly tough for it's weight, and can help shave those last few grams off your pack weight.
